Installing, (down)patching and connecting

This guide gives step by step instructions on how to install World of Wacraft with the Wrath of the Lick King expansion, patch up your installation, and connect to the TenaciousGaming servers.

If you find any errors in this guide, or if you have any ideas for things to add, let me know. Also, if you have any questions after reading this, or if you're having troubles with any part of the guide, feel free to drop me a PM!

Table of Contents
  • Downloading and Installing WoW.
  • Patching your WoW Installation to 3.2.0.
  • Disabling automatic patching.
  • Connecting to the TenaciousGaming servers.
  • Downpatching from 3.3.x to 3.2.0 (not needed for TenaciousGaming at the moment).
  • Common connection issues and how to fix them.

Note to Mac OS X users: while I included download links for Mac OS X in this guide, this guide is written with windows in mind. Some things will be different on a Mac, but you can probably still use these instructions as a basic guideline. Also, I have not checked the Mac OS X download liks, so using them is at your own risk!

1. Downloading and Installing World of Warcraft

Firstly, check if your computer meets the minimum requirements for running the game. The requirements are as follows:

For windows:

Quote

OS: Windows XP / Windows Vista (with latest Service Packs)
Processor:
Minimum: Intel Pentium 4 1.3 GHz or AMD Athlon XP 1500+
Recommended: Dual-core processor, such as the Intel Pentium D or AMD Athlon 64 X2

Memory:
Minimum: 512 MB RAM (1GB for Vista users)
Recommended: 1 GB RAM (2 GB for Vista users)

Video:
Minimum: 3D graphics processor with Hardware Transform and Lighting with 32 MB VRAM Such as an ATI Radeon 7200 or NVIDIA GeForce 2 class card or better
Recommended: 3D graphics processor with Vertex and Pixel Shader capability with 128 MB VRAM Such as an ATI Radeon X1600 or NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT class card or better

Controls: A keyboard and mouse are required. Input devices other than a mouse and keyboard are not supported.
Connectivity: You must have an active broadband Internet connection to play.
Mouse: Multi-button mouse with scroll wheel recommended.
Hard Drive Space: 15 GB free hard drive space

For Mac OS X:

Quote

OS: Mac OS X 10.4.11 or newer
Processor:
Minimum: PowerPC G5 1.6 GHz or Intel Core Duo processor
Recommended: Intel 1.8GHz processor or better

Memory:
Minimum: 1 GB RAM
Recommended: 2 GB RAM

Video:
Minimum: 3D graphics processor with Hardware Transform and Lighting with 64 MB VRAM Such as an ATI Radeon 9600 or NVIDIA GeForce Ti 4600 class card or better
Recommended: 3D graphics processor with Vertex and Pixel Shader capability with 128 MB VRAM Such as an ATI Radeon X1600 or NVIDIA 7600 class card or better

If your computer meets the requirements, you can start downloading World of Warcraft:

Please note this installer is for the US English version of the game. If you want the game in an other language, please check this page (scroll down to where it says 'playable client').

After you've downloaded the installer, run it. On the first screen, be sure to choose Wrath of the Lich King. Just follow the instructions on your screen, and it should install without any problems. When the installation has finished, please continue to the next part of this guide to patch up your installation to 3.2.0.

2. Patching your World of Warcraft Installation to 3.2.0

Before patching up you should determine which language your game is installed in, as the patches should be made for the same language. While this might seem obvious, it is not always: enGB and enUS installations look exactly the same, but you can't use enGB patches on an enUS installation.
So how do you find out what language your game is in? If the you used the download links above to install WoW, you're using the enUS version of WoW. If you didn't, and are not sure which language you are running, this is how you can find out:

3. Disabling automatic patching

Retail is usually ahead of TenaciousGaming. If you don't disable automatic patching, your WoW might patch up to versions not supported by Tenacious.

To disable automatic patching, do the following:
  • Click the "My Computer" icon in your start menu or on your desktop.
  • Go to the directory you've installed World of Warcraft in (usually C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft).
  • Delete the file BackgroundDownloader.exe (it might just show up as BackgroundDownloader, without .exe at the end. Don't worry, it's the same file).
  • Go to the data folder.
  • Inside the data folder you'll see an other folder with your WoW's language (usually enUS or enGB) as the name. Enter that folder.
  • Edit the file called "realmlist.wtf".
  • Remove the line with the patchlist from your realmlist file, and save it.
  • Go back up to the main WoW folder.
  • Be sure to launch WoW with wow.exe, and not with launcher.exe. The shortcut on your desktop points to launcher.exe by default, so I'd recommend changing that too.

4. Connecting to the TenaciousGaming Servers

First, you'll have to register an account at the server (please note that a forum account is not the same as an account on the server, and can therefore not be used to connect to the server). After creating the account, it will take about 10 minutes until you'll be able to connect, but you can already continue with the next step.

Realmlist: To be able to play on TenaciousGaming, you will have to configure your WoW to connect to our servers.
  • Click the "My Computer" icon in your start menu or on your desktop.
  • Navigate to the directory you've installed World of Warcraft in (usually C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft).
  • Go to the data folder.
  • Inside the data folder you'll see an other folder with your WoW's language (usually enUS or enGB) as the name. Enter that folder.
  • Edit the file called "realmlist.wtf". You can use a program like notepad to edit it.
  • Delete everything in the file and add:
    set realmlist login.tenaciousgaming.com

  • Save the file and close it, you should now be able to log in to the server.

5. Downpatching from 3.3.x to 3.2.0.
NOTE: patch 3.3.0 has not been released by Blizzard yet, so at the moment this part of the guide is redundant.

If you accidentally patched up to 3.3.x, you will have to downpatch to be able to play on these servers. To downpatch, follow the steps below carefully:
  • Click the "My Computer" icon in your start menu or on your desktop.
  • Navigate to the directory you've installed World of Warcraft in (usually C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft).
    Posted Image
  • You'll now see a file named wow.exe. Delete this file. If you do see a file called wow, but not wow.exe that is ok too, just delete the file.
  • Go to your Data Folder located in that directory. Assuming if you are using the default folder, the Data Folder will be C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft\Data
  • Delete the file named "Patch.mpq"
  • Go back to the previous folder. You'll see a file called Repair.exe. Double click this file to run the repair tool.
    Posted Image
  • Click the button with the text 'Check files only'. The program will now start checking your world of warcraft directory, and find that wow.exe is missing. It will restore the game to it's original state, without any patches installed.

After downpatching, you will have to patch up your WoW to 3.2.0 again. More information about patching up can be found in the the second chapter of this guide (see above).

6. Common connection issues and how to fix them.

6.1. When trying to log in I get an error saying 'Unable to Connect'.
This is usually caused by a wrong realmlist. To check if your realmlist is set correctly, follow these steps:
  • Click the "My Computer" icon in your start menu or on your desktop.
  • Go to the directory you've installed World of Warcraft in (usually C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft).
  • Go to the data folder.
  • Inside the data folder you'll see an other folder with your WoW's language (usually enUS or enGB) as the name. Enter that folder.
  • Edit the file called "realmlist.wtf".
  • Make sure the file contains exactly the following text. Nothing more, nothing less:
    set realmlist login.tenaciousgaming.com

  • Save the file and close it, you should now be able to log in to the server.

If you still get the error after this, your most likely have a firewall or a router blocking the connections. How you should fix this exactly depends on which firewall or router you are using. If you're not sure how to do it, try finding information with google or an other search engine.
In some cases the login server might be down. Usually there will be an announcement in the shoutbox if that's the case. Please do not create topics or posts about it on the forums then, downtime topics are against the forums rules.

6.2. I'm sure I'm entering the correct password, but it keeps saying 'the information you have entered is not valid'.
Firstly, keep in mind that it can take about 15 minutes until you can log in to your account after registering. So if you only just registered it, wait a few minutes and try again.
If you're sure you've waited long enough, or if you've logged in to the account before, try logging in to the account manager (not available yet, sorry).

If logging in to the account manager does work:
  • Check if your realmlist is set correctly:
    • Click the "My Computer" icon in your start menu or on your desktop.
    • Go to the directory you've installed World of Warcraft in (usually C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft).
    • Go to the data folder.
    • Inside the data folder you'll see an other folder with your WoW's language (usually enUS or enGB) as the name. Enter that folder.
    • Edit the file called "realmlist.wtf".
    • Make sure the file contains the following text:
      set realmlist login.tenaciousgaming.com

    • Save the file and close it, you should now be able to log in to the server.

  • If it still doesn't work, try changing your password to something else in the account manager (not available yet). Some passwords, like passwords longer than 16 characters, don't work in-game but do work in the account manager.
If logging in to the account manager does not work use the password retriever (not available yet) to get your password sent to your e-mail address.

6.3. Whenever I open WoW it keeps trying to patch up.
To disable automatic patching do the following:
Double check if you're editing the correct realmlist file. The realmlist was moved in 3.x. The realmlist is now located in C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft\Data\%language%\realmlist.wtf . [b]%language%
is the language your WoW is in, usually something like enUS or enGB.
