As I expected, kids have loved it. Even resistant child was drawn in and now can hardly be torn away. Lots of user control. My two kids and me can all play at same time, too. Has fun training mode. I especially love the ninja ropes. Now if I can just get good enough to swing across landscape like Spiderman . . .

Now, a couple of people here on Amazon and on other sites on the internet haven’t been able to get it to run, so this is something I was worried about. My experience is for an XP machine and I was happy to see on CD case that XP was one of the systems it worked on. On first install, I did not select Direct X 6, and the game, indeed, did not run, though I’m not sure that’s the reason why. I had also not selected the patches option. So I de-installed the game and then re-installed, doing two things different: I first selected the patches option, which gave me a line to type into the “run” box if the game didn’t install properly. I copied this line onto a piece of paper. Then, on this second install, I selected to install Direct X 6. The game still did not work after this second install. So I tried the last option: I exited the game, which at this point was just a blank screen, by pressing ctrl-alt-delete and ending the tasks associated with worms armageddon. Then I typed the line of code into the run box. I rebooted for the heck of it, just in case. And this time the game ran.

Hope this helps people who have problems.

Slowly..
By Victor
Before I start I’m going to admit that this game is very fun and very intense. No doubt that it contains way more action than it’s predecessors. The only problem is.. it’s not finished. And what I mean by that is that this game needs some serious patching updates before I’d even consider it a full fledged product release. Some players have embraced it’s flaws with hopes of fixes (like myself), but some people need to understand what they’re getting in to before they get disappointed.

When Epic released the UT3 demo back in October it was released with GREAT anticipation. FINALLY a glimpse at an Unreal game that contained lifelike characters with bigger and badder action like never before. Created with the Unreal Engine 3, the characters and environments alike are definitely sweet eye candy.. which leads me to believe that the last several years this game has been in development have been merely to make it look good. The Beta contained a LOT of bugs, which is normal considering its a “Beta Demo,” but when it was announced that UT3 had gone gold in a matter of weeks many had their doubts that the bugs that plagued the Beta Demo would be fixed in the retail version. Many of the bugs had remained. One such bug has the players viewpoint very close to the ground. It’s like playing UT3 with little people instead of the proper height of the character models.

Much of what made UT2k4 and UT99 so great have been stripped from UT3. If you’re a fan of the movement styles of 2k4 then you’ll be greatly disappointed as the jump dodge has been removed. Jumping in itself is bad enough because some obsticles just aren’t low enough for the character to jump over even with double jump. Fans of both eras will notice that the colors are washed with 100 types of gray and brown. The absense of bright colors (on players and environments) tend to make the game depressing and grundgey. Only a few levels even contain color and even so they’re just lights. The game is also drowns in bloom and distance fog. Sure, the bloom and fog give the game more realism, but they also hinder sight when playing the game. At one point a players screen can get so bright (due to power ups coloring the screen) that it makes it even more difficult to see anything.

The User Interface (menu system) is very consolized and not PC friendly. Because the game is coming out for the PS3 and 360, Epic decided to give PC users a very consolized looking menu. Many areas do not have tabs or drop down menus for easy navigation. You find yourself going menu after menu then going back to a previous menu only to go forward again. It’s a real hassle. Deep customization is gone from this game. PC users cannot control many of the graphic settings they could control in previous Unreal Tournament games. It’s either all or nothing by sliding “World Detials” and “Texture Details” 1 through 5 with 5 being the max detail settings. If you REALLY want Unreal Tournament 3 to be truly customized you would have to go into the game’s .ini files and edit the code by hand. And even when you do so, your game still needs to connect to the internet where Epic and/or Gamespy have servers that SAVE your .ini files. Yes, Epic and/or Gamespy have servers that store your game’s .ini files on their servers. The mothership does call. Sometimes your changes stick and sometimes they don’t.

Epic chose Gamespy, much to the “delite” (sarcasm) of UT players everywhere, as their choice of software for finding game browsers online. The browser in both the beta and retail have not changed. You MUST create an online profile for yourself in order to play online. Sometimes, when you want to play offline, the game still asks you to connect to the internet. It’s very annoying. One problem is that when browsing for specific games (like having the option to not show empty servers or full servers), you finalize your decision and then when the game list shows up.. it didn’t even filter out what you’re looking for. So you have to go back, redo everything and try again. There are no favorites tab, you cannot see who’s playing on any of the servers, and you cannot spectate any server.

The single player campaign in itself is a fun addition to those who just want to play offline. There is a story that goes along with many many battles. You play all the gametypes (except duel) with your team (Ronin). The bot AI on the enemy team is very good… but I can’t say the same about any bot AI on your own team. You’ll have to experience that one for yourself.

Warfare is a fun addition to the game along with the other classic gametypes. It’s one big game of capture the flag mixed with Onslaught (a gametype from UT2k4) with a ball. My only gripe is that Warfare has a LOT of maps, while gametypes like CTF and vCTF (Vehicle Capture the Flag) have a handful. A small handful.

Character customization is not as deep as it could have been and there aren’t as many characters to choose from. You have to play through single player mode to unlock new characters such as the Necris.

There are many problems that plague this “final” release of the game that are currently being fixed in beta patches that are being privately tested as I write this. What’s disappointing is that the game should have been finished when it was released, not patched heavily within a short time. If you’re that picky about it then maybe you should wait for an official patch.

Nonetheless, if you can look beyond the flaws and want a game where you can run and gun, blow things up with vehicles and lay some smack down to your friend across the country.. then this game is for you.

Well, this is NOT the case with this game. UT3 ROCKS!

Graphically you have not seen anything that beautiful this year! Surfaces, shadows and explosions are just GORGEOUS! Yes, I liked the graphics even more than those in CRYSIS (and I gave CRYSIS a raving review – check it out if you like): they are crisper and even more atmospheric.

Fans of the UT-series will meet again all our old …friends: the Bio Rifle, the Link Gun, the Shock Rifle, the Flak Cannon (my favorite!), the Rocket Launcher and the Sniper Rifle. New additions are the Enforcer (to replace the under-used Assault rifle) and the Impact Hammer (replacing the shield gun). An interesting twist: hitting an enhanced target with the Impact Hammer’s alternative fire will drop his power-up for you to grab!
SuperWeapons are also at our disposal, both the Redeamer and the new Target Painter.

The number of available vehicles has been enriched as well. Besides the Axon vehicles from UT2004 (which have been renovated), a new Necris set is available: vehicles that demonstrate novel behaviors, yet are beautifully balanced with the Axon set.

What is really impressive once more are the environments. You have to see them to believe them…! And the skies…! I have not seen more breathtaking skies ever since, well, the original UNREAL.

Since this is a pretty demanding game, once the rockets start flying do not trust that by meeting the Minimum requirements you will be cruising. So, here are the official RECOMMENDED requirements:
· Pentium 2.4GHz Dual-Core (or AMD equivalent)
· 1GB of RAM
· nVIDIA 7800GTX (or ATI x1300 equivalent)
· 8 GB of HDD space
· WinXp (SP2) or WinVISTA

CRYSIS is surely getting a run for its money for GAME OF THE YEAR!

I cannot imagine anyone not enjoying this…

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

The most immediately obvious change from UT2004 is the graphics – even without the DirectX 10-enabled video card, you still get sunlight reflecting off of water, textured stone and soil, and as remarkably photorealistic visuals as featured in the preview images and videos. The 50+ bundled maps help show it all off with more symmetrical and organic design, and WAY more built-in visual gimmickry (neon lights, plasma fields, etc) than was featured in 2004; anything in the game that could be made shinier, flashier, or just generally more impressive looking has been given serious and creative attention to detail. But even with those details set to minimum in the graphics options, you’ll want an NVidia 7800 series or better for a playable game experience (8800 or better for max details). Sound-wise, some of 2004′s better sound effects have been used again here, and this is the first shooter I can think of where I’ve actually left the music on; it’s more like soft background ambience than music, and it changes in tempo and intensity with events in the game such as taking damage and kills.

Gameplay is largely unchanged, but with a few nice additions and a whole lot more speed – you’d better bring your “A-game” and some caffeine or you’ll never keep up with what’s happening. As with most new incarnations of Unreal, the transition from an older version (or other older/slower shooters) takes quite a bit of practice just to build up your reflexes for the huge leap in game pace. Every aspect of the game has been made faster from vehicles to melees to even just walking – on larger maps, every player has a Hoverboard, a hovering skateboard device, so even without a vehicle you can quickly cruise from one side of a map to the other (but without a weapon while in use, though you can use it while carrying the flag in Capture The Flag). Those of you who need or like bots in your matches will find the higher-difficulty versions to be remarkably cunning and/or helpful. Enemy bots can fire based on predictions made several steps in advance, and can Shock Combo from vast distances, also often predictively. And teammate bots now give details on where they’re going and where enemies are on the map, making them more helpful than a lot of human players.

Little has changed with the gametypes as well, with only the addition of Vehicle Capture the Flag (large-map Capture The Flag with vehicles) and Duel (one-on-one deathmatch). Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, and Capture The Flag are still there, and Onslaught has been renamed to Warfare. (The Warfare gametype now also features an “Orb” device which spawns at each team’s base, and when used on any unshielded power node, regardless of color or power status, turns it instantly to that team’s color with full power.) Single-player Campaign can now also be more than just single-player [see below].

When you do get a vehicle, you’ll find they have much snappier responses and can be maneuvered in ways that were never possible in UT2004. The now-smaller Manta can change direction on a dime, the revised Scorpion features an “afterburner” which sends it rocketing at the push of a button (and should it collide with any other vehicle, explodes Kamikaze-style), even the Goliath main battle tank brakes and accelerates so brusquely as to produce suspension nose-dive and -lift. There’s also the addition of the dark and alien “Necris” vehicles, such as the several-story tall Darkwalker or the jellyfish-like Fury, all of which effectively double the number of vehicles the game has to offer. And all vehicles now have the ability to take along teammates – a teammate on a hoverboard can “grapple” to any vehicle using a tractor beam of energy and be tethered along a la waterskiing.

Weapons are mostly the same from the previous version while having undergone visual changes. Of note is inherent weapon inaccuracy; unlike 2004 where a perfect aim always meant a perfect hit regardless of the weapon, most of the weapons now are slightly inaccurate, and more so with distance (including vehicle weapons). There’s a new class of weapons/devices known as deployables, which include the famous Spider Mines (now laid as a single trap, as opposed to a weapon), a EMP Mine (shuts off all vehicles in the area and sets off their ejection seats), and a Stasis Field (slows down time over a given area). The Double Damage power-up is still part of the game, but now can be knocked free for anyone to pick up if the user is killed, plus there can be more than one per map. There’s also a “Berserk” power-up, which doubles the rate of fire of any weapon for a brief time, and even an Invulnerability power-up. And yes, you can have more than one power-up at the same time…

Those of you who enjoy internet battle will be glad to know that UT3′s online experience is as fast and as seamless as previous versions; pick your game criteria, pick a server, and you’re playing. Also of note is the new “Customize Player” option, which allows you to select and alter various physical details of your avatar, such as armor configuration and clothing, giving you your own unique visual identity. And if you prefer solo playing, the Campaign gametype provides an entire storyline-and-objectives game, though you have the option here also to let others join your Campaign, either by internet or LAN.

So Epic has once again delivered on all counts in this season’s faster, harder, better arena shooter, destined to create another bump in hardware sales as gamers rush to update their computers to take in the carnage in its full glory. Highly recommended if you have the video card and reflexes.

This is my first netbook purchase, and I wanted a machine with the following characteristics;

- at least 2 GB of RAM
- graphics processor capable of playing 1080P media
- decent battery life (willing to sacrifice battery life for performance, since I’m usually close to a wall socket)
- Windows 7 Premium (offers improved battery life over Windows 7 Starter)
- 11.6″ to 12.1″ size
- 1366 x 768 resolution
- At least a 100 GB hard drive (SSD still too pricey and swapping out drives voids warranty)

 First, a little background information. Thanks to restrictions by Intel and Microsoft, the number of high performance netbooks is quite small. The vast majority of netbooks have just 1 GB of ram, and are too small in size (most are in the 9-10″ range). However, I settled on 4 possibilities, the ASUS EEE PC 1201N, Lenovo IdeaPad S12, HP Mini 311, and the Samsung N510. I immediately discounted the Samsung because of the high pricetag ($600). The remaining three all lacked one feature of the 1201N; dual core processors. The Asus is the only netbook to currently feature 1.6GHz Dual Core Intel Atom 330s. In general, the order of netbook processors is as follows;

Dual Core Atom 330s (found mostly on nettops) >> Atom N450 > Atom N280 > Atom N270 > Atom Z520

Since the Mini 311, Lenovo, and Asus were all comparably priced, I decided to go with the newer and more powerful Asus. I should also note that the HP Mini 311 only has the Nvidia Ion LE chipset, which is not DirectX 10 compatible, although it can be hacked to full Ion compatibility. However, I suspect that mainstream users are not interested in hacking their netbooks. I had also considered waiting until CES 2010 finished to get a glimpse of future netbooks. But, based on what has been revealed so far at CES, most of the future offerings will be just 10″ netbooks with a single core N450, 1 GB RAM and a new Crystal HD Broadcom chip. At best, on parity with the 1201N, and probably marked into the $400 range when all optioned out. Ultimately, I decided that I wanted a netbook larger than 10″.

The Amazon price for the 1201N was $482, which is at the high end of the netbook market. Why should I get this 1201N, when I can easily get a comparably priced CULV (Intel’s Core 2 Ultra Low Voltage) light notebook with superior performance you ask? Well, the CULV performance is only superior with regard to the processor; GPU-wise, CULV equipped notebooks with Intel’s integrated graphics GMA3150/4500MHD solutions are actually worse than the Nvidia Ion equipped 1201N. A CULV notebook with higher performance GPU would run you in the $800-1000 range. Asus has a CULV with Intel 4500MHD for about $600, but the Intel integrated graphics leaves much to be desired. As far as I know, there is no sub-$800 CULV with 9400M that weighs less than 4 lbs and is less than 13″ and is ultra-mobile. The 1201N fills that gap.

Nvidia Ion (GeForce 9400M) >> Intel GMA3150 (PineTrail) and 4500MHD > Intel GMA950 >> Intel GMA500

I also thought about waiting for Nvidia’s Ion2 platform to hit the market, but considering that it took Nvidia and the computer manufacturers close to one year to output a netbook to take advantage of the Ion, I decided to go ahead and make the purchase. The Ion gives you the capability to play *some* games; it definitely won’t play Crysis! You’ll most likely have to play at 800 x 600 resolution to get any sort of decent performance, but at least there’s a capability. You probably won’t be able to get past the loading screen on other netbooks. While Ion dings battery life, it in combination with the dual Atoms allows you to watch 1080P content while multi-tasking on the 1201N, previously unheard of in a netbook.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS of the 1201N: The size is perfect! I’m glad I didn’t get a 10″ netbook. It arrived pretty barebones; netbook, battery, charger, and a few software CDs. Initial impressions were very good; the glossy black cover actually seems pretty fingerprint resistant. Overall construction is very solid, be careful once you insert the battery pack, because it tips the center of mass very sharply. Make sure you have a tight grip- mine nearly slipped out of my hand. In addition, I thought the Velcro straps on the battery cords were a nice touch; they keep the wires tucked away more neatly than plastic zip ties. Some also complained of the hard drive being too noisy- I didn’t notice anything unusual, just the steady hum of the hard drive that was mildly audible only if I placed my ear right on top of the keyboard. Air flow seems fine- after several hours of usage, the keyboard was still the same temperature, and the bottom was warm, but not hot.

KEYBOARD/TOUCHPAD: I really like the keyboard, and note, it is a full-size keyboard. Some online review sites thought it flexed a bit too much, but I didn’t notice any flexing. The chiclet style keyboard appears to be very solidly made. I do have one minor complaint, whilst typing, my greasy wrists tend to leave imprints all over the nice glossy plastic wrist-rest. I have never used a dimpled one-button touchpad before, but it seems to work well. While the touchpad only has a single button/bar, it has independent left-and-right hand sides that can be depressed, effectively making it a 2-button touchpad. Those of you who don’t like touchpads may want to invest in a USB mouse for convenience.

WINDOWS 7: Initial setup of Windows 7 took about 30-40 minutes; thereafter, boot time is about 30 seconds. There’s not much bloatware pre-installed; basically only MS Works, Trend Micro Anti-Virus, MS Office Starter, Acrobat Reader, and a media-player. Response to keyboard and mouse inputs seems fast, I didn’t notice any lagging. Minor quibble- how do I get the Windows Classic look in Windows 7?!

DISPLAY: As for the display, I like the glossy screen, it looks fantastic, and text is clear, sharp, and very legible. Before I purchased the netbook, I was bothered by the screen not being flush with the bezel in various promotional images. Now with the unit actually in hand, I don’t really notice any aesthetic issues. The whole seashell design is very nicely done.

OTHER OBSERVATIONS: Maximum battery time with a full charge is about 5-6.5 hours, but that’s with LCD brightness at 50%, battery saver, and very little user activity. The battery saver settings are easy to toggle, simply pressing Fn + spacebar cycles through the different choices. The hard drive is oddly partitioned into a c: drive with about 100 GB and a d: drive with about 125 GB. Note that Nvidia’s ION chipset takes 250 MB of the 2 GB of RAM for its own usage.

1080P MEDIA: Aha, here’s the juicy part! So I installed CoreAVC Professional, and disabled deblocking (which helped to offset some of the CPU load). I played a 1080P music video, and opened up Windows task manager. CPU utilization was at just 60%, and I was also able to open a MS Powerpoint file, an MS Word file, and play a 3D Chess game. The 1080P file played fine, with no hiccups. I was quite impressed by the multi-tasking in the 1201N. Battery life decreased a bit to roughly 4 hours, but I wasn’t continuously playing high definition media.

Also, I can’t stress how important it is to use CoreAVC Pro for decoding High Definition H.264 media; the 1201N can handle 1080P without CoreAVC (using ffdshow), but CPU utilization shoots up to ~ 90%. With CoreAVC and deblocking turned off, it goes down to 60%. CoreAVC really helps boost the 1201N’s multi-tasking abilities, it’s also not too expensive. I think Core AVC 2.0 is selling for about $8-$10.

Sorry ladies and gents, haven’t gotten around to testing games on it yet.

OTHER THOUGHTS: Reliability wise, all the netbooks are about the same, which is to say, not very reliable. Well, at least ASUS isn’t as bad as HP. I decided to do myself a favor and buy a Squaretrade Extended warranty for peace of mind.

CONCLUSION: In summary, should you get this 1201N? Well, it depends on your needs. But if having 8 hour+ battery performance isn’t terribly important, and you want a well performing netbook with decent battery life, superior multimedia capabilities, and some gaming performance, then I strongly recommend the 1201N.

I want to also add that purchasing from Amazon for $480 with no tax and free shipping makes this deal much hotter than buying from newegg, wherein tax tips the price over $500.

UPDATE (01/25/10): Engadget released their review today of the Dell Mini 10 with Broadcom Crystal HD hardware based accelerated netbook. All optioned out, with 1366×768 screen, the Dell Mini 10 comes to $425, which is actually quite close to the 1201N price-point. They noted that the Broadcom Crystal HD is ONLY capable of playing back 1080P WMV files media using Windows Media Player 11. For those of you who wish to use Quicktime, VLC, WMP Classic, or Flash 10.1 you’re out of luck. MKV (matroskas), MOV, BLU-RAY DISCS, are **NOT** supported by the Broadcom Crystal HD chip, go figure. I know several other netbook manufacturers were considering using the Broadcom Crystal chip as well. The Dell Mini 10 also does not have an HDMI out, and the size is 2″ smaller than the 1201N. Here, size makes a big difference.

So if you want any sort of 1080P playback utilizing a large range of input files while also maintaining multi-tasking at a sub-$500 price with reasonable battery life, the 1201N is the best option!

UPDATE (03/01/10): Engadget has reported on an updated, next-gen 1201PN model at this year’s CeBIT. The Dual Atom 330s may be substituted with a single Atom N450, but the Ion replaced with Ion 2, which features switchable graphics and up to 10 hours of battery life. It appears that even with the single and weaker Atom N450, the 1201PN can still handle 1080P media. Everything else is the same. The 1201PN improves 3DMark scores by 33%; 1503 compared to 2000, in recent tests. My thoughts are that overall performance wise, the 1201N with its Dual Core Atoms still trumps the upcoming 1201PN. The 1201PN’s lone single core N450 is going to be the big bottleneck. The only area where the 1201PN is superior, is in the battery life department, with its Ion2 capabilities.

UPDATE (03/12/10): Intel has announced that they will release a future dual-core N500 chip, based on the D510 chips currently used in nettop systems. If Asus were to release an N500 netbook with Ion2 graphics, then I think that will be my next netbook.

I also read a glowing recommendation from Laptop Magazine. The size is perfect and the ASUS 1201N is a nice, slim design.

However, the slow hard drive is noticeable and “Super Performance” mode still doesn’t cut it (my wife’s ASUS 1005HA is more responsive). I see that several buyers upgraded to a 7200rpm drive. I have already purchased and upgraded the RAM to 4GB (this does nothing for speed but it allows me to have a whole lot more going on at one time). So perhaps a hard drive upgrade is in order but spending $200 to upgrade memory and hard drive on a $500 machine puts it in another product class and kind of defeats the purpose of buying at this price point to start with.

First, however, I have to see about a new problem that has arisen recently.

About a week after receiving my ASUS 1201N it started “randomly” shutting off. There seemed to be no rhyme or reason. It could be running on AC or battery and I might have five applications open or none. The machine is vented well.

So I Googled “asus 1201n shuts off” and selected the ASUSTek Computer Inc. Forum link. For the next half hour my stomach lurched as I read report after report (seven pages at the time) of buyers having the same problem. Sometimes the issue seemed related to the USB mouse driver, other times to overheating because the cooling fan failed to start after awaking from sleep mode. At the time I am writing this review ASUS does not seem to have a solution and buyers had started returning their 1201Ns.

So I will give this another week or so and see if the problem can be resolved with a BIOS fix or software patch and then I’ll decide if I will return the machine.

UPDATE: March 21, 2010 – ASUS released a BIOS upgrade that seems to have fixed the shutdown problem. I’ve been running almost two weeks now without a blue screen or any of the other annoying shutdown problems. Have decided to keep this machine and upgrade my rating to four stars. Still wish the machine was a little more responsive.

This is my 4th laptop that I have owned and it is the perfect blend of portability and performance. All of my past laptops have been Dell Inspirons 15 inch machines that have treated me well, but I wanted something that I could carry around without the hassle of it taking up my entire travel bag. I played around with other 10.1 inch nebooks, but found them to be too small and not worth the hassle, especially since I have a Blackberry smartphone which can pretty much do everything a typical netbook can do. I looked at the HP Mini that offered the Ion Nvidia graphic card and had a slightly bigger 11.6 screen and almost purchased that device until I saw the Asus 1201N in a website’s review. I noticed the Asus had a dual core atom and included all the upgrades of an HP 311 mini. I immediately found this Asus being sold on another vendor site (would have definitely bought from Amazon cause I have never been dissatisfied with this site, but it wasn’t available yet) and purchased. I have not regretted the decision. The dual atom processor and the ION NVIDIA graphic card means you don’t sacrifice as much functionality as you would with your typical netbook. I basically use it to do office work, light gaming and multimedia stuff like iTunes and watching movies (via web and locally) and have not disappointed. Below, in summary, are some of the pros and cons:

Pros:

- Outstanding screen resolution – high definition and crystal clear.
- perfect size – compared to the Dell mini, which is 10.1 the Asus 1201N machine is not that much bigger in size when folded, yet the screen offers a lot more view ability with 12.1 inches than a 10.1 inch screen.
- Plays multimedia pretty well. I have noticed some slowness with Hulu, but I have read this is a problem with Flash that is supposed to eventually be worked out.
- Windows 7 Home Premium included. The HP Mini I was looking at had XP Home on it for the same price (assuming the other features included).
- Pretty quick loading up – less than a minute to fully boot and be ready to roll.
- stays pretty cool other than a small area on the left that disperses the heat.
- Various power modes you can set to balance efficiency versus performance.
- Very competitive price given HDD size and all the included features like Bluetooth and SD media reader.

Cons:

- Battery only goes for about 4.5 hours at best and takes awhile to charge (this also might be because I am using high performance mode at the least so to be fair there is a power saving mode I have not tried).
- Keyboard sometimes is a little less responsive than typical keyboard. Half keystrokes don’t necessarily work when typing quickly. This is not a big issue.

Overall I am very satisfied with this netbook. I did quite a bit of research and was between a high power netbook like this one, a ULV (ultra low voltage), or a smaller laptop. In the end I felt this machine was the best option for the price. This machine seemed more powerful than any ULV in the same price range (when considering the ION Nvidia graphic card) and when you started going into higher price ranges, you were almost better off with a low end laptop. The battery is definitely not going to provide your typical 5-10 hrs of time other netbooks/ULVs provide, but with more performance power, you are going to sacrifice a little battery life. The way I look at it, I can always buy another battery to carry around, but I can’t just turn other netbooks into higher performance machines, when I need it.

****UPDATE****

I’ve gotten to play around with this netbook a little more since my initial review and I am happy to report that the 1080p on this unit is amazing given it is only a “netbook”. I was able to hook it up to both a 40 inch and 65 inch TV using an HDMI cable and the unit was immediately displaying on the screen in full HD without a hitch. In addition, I joined Netflixs and was able to run movies seamlessly from their Streaming Internet Movies On Demand application. Hulu is still a little choppy, but given Netflixs works great, I now have some sort of proof it is the Flash application Hulu is using and not the hardware causing any problems.

I’ve a huge fan of MMORPGs. I bought this game the day of it’s release. After installing it I began what would be the best week of January. The game was amazing to say the least…. for the first two weeks. I’ll go into specific detail now.

Character Creation – I’ve read comments stating that it isn’t all that great but honestly it’s a lot of fun to edit your character’s appearance. I spent 2 hours alone just on trying different combinations of clothing, colors and accessories. As for the powers, you have six trees to choose from: fire, ice, nature, gadgets, mental and magic. It’s very limited but the powers unlocked for each one are very useful for just about any situation. Each one focuses on a specific role; fire and ice are defense, mental and gadgets are control and magic and nature are healing. All classes can enter into a damage mode so there’s no need for damage dealers. Then you choose what type of weapon you want to fight with, this will be your main damage dealer so choose wisely. You have a few good selections but none that will blow your mind. Melee weapons like the staff, one handed, two handed, brawling, martial arts and the bow(yes the bow is melee). Ranged you get hand blasters, rifle and dual pistols. I might be forgetting a weapon but I doubt it. You can choose one of three mentors, who they are depend on whether you’re a villain or a hero. The reality is that it doesn’t really have a huge difference in the game, it only makes a difference in the armor you get to unlock and the first few missions. Body type is very limited as there are only three, a child, normal buffed up human and a hulking huge beast of a man. After that, you choose a name and you’re good to go.

Story – Story is pretty interesting in the beginning, after that it’s nothing special. Your mentor has a small effect on your first few quests but after that you’re basically doing the same thing every other hero is doing. I never felt like I was doing anything interesting, no immersion from the quests. All the quest lines follow the exact same path; do three quests then do an instance. Which is fine but then once you get to the instance, more often than not you’re rescuing the main heroes. Well, not the main heroes as Wonder woman, Superman and Batman only make about two to three appearances in the entire game and they are always getting beat down. Story feels weak, you jump around way too much and it feels way too random. Help Superman with Braniac, help Batman with the Joker, then go help Wonder woman with Shazaam, there’s no structure/order aside from having to rescue these powerful experienced heroes in most missions.

PvP – PvP experience depends on where you play. If you’re on a PvP server then you had better be a hardcore PvP lover as you’ll constantly get killed by max level player enemies. Mind you, it’s a starting area and everyone there is about level 5-7 and you get nothing for killing other players as a prize so it’s just for grieving purposes. If you’re OK with that then you’ll be fine. I felt like there should have been more rewards for killing other players. There are little missions you can take that tell you to kill an enemy player but they aren’t anything special. I got more from doing races than doing those missions. In a PvE server, you can flag yourself for PvP and just go about your business until you run into an enemy player that’s also flagged which to me was much better because you did it when you were ready and you weren’t harassed by players that were board.

PvP & Instances – I seperated this because this is another beast altogether. Instances in general are an enigma to me as after two weeks of playing I haven’t done more than two. I queued myself on a Thursday and on a Saturday was still waiting to get in. Once I finally got in I was asked to leave because the players there were waiting for someone else. Either that or I’d be loaded into an instance that was already started and was abandoned by the original team because they got wiped out. No idea why I’d get loaded into an instance that’s already started. The more balanced of the instances are the duos in which you go play with someone you’re grouped with. Raids on the other hand, are a lot more complicated. If you don’t have the proper team you’re going to feel a lot of pain and frustration and by the right team I mean 2 of each class. Sure you don’t have to but then you’re going to experience headaches which suck the fun out of the game.

Chat System & Social aspect – JEEZUS! Just JEEZUS…. Never seen such a horrible chat system in all my 11 years of gaming in MMORPGs. To say that it’s broken is an understatement. After all this time league chat (the chat channel for your “guild” which is called a league in DCUO) is still broken, unusable as in not working. It works every day for about four hours after they bring back the servers then it dies again. Chatting is such a pain, you can’t stick to one channel always having to type what channel you want to direct your comment to. As in /shout every time you want to chat with everyone in your current “world” or /g every time you want to chat with someone in your group. Now, you don’t HAVE to but it randomly reverts back so you run the risk of typing something and sending it to the wrong channel or no one for that matter. Being unable to redo the UI is inexcusable considering that this hasn’t been a real issue for any MMO in the past few years. By that I mean no resizing of the chat window, it’s always the same size and only fits a few sentences at a time. In order to check what others have written you need to press “O” which brings you to a window that covers your entire screen so your choice is either to chat or play. You have to come to a full stop to check what someone has written if you missed it. People just try to defend this by stating “use voice chat” but the truth is that the voice chat isn’t too stable either and whether it’s there or not, typing is the bread and butter of an online game as it’s the way people communicate. Not being able to communicate with your league is probably the most frustrating as you can never really organize anything unless you have a TS channel which seems to be turning into something that’s mandatory now. There’s no real reason to group up with people unless you’re doing hunts (quests to kill super bosses roaming around the city) and even then you just group up, no one chats because it’s such a pain, then you part your separate ways. Nothing in the game drives people to stick together, to socialize other than the odd request for help with bosses. It feels extremely lonely as most of the time once you leave the starting area you rarely run into other players. World chat is usually dead or near barren.

Combat – The main attraction of the game, the combat is so much fun. Sure a thug with a bat can kill you even though you just finished defeating Metalo after he whooped Superman but it isn’t a huge issue aside from kind of damaging the immersion. Combat is tons of fun especially once you’ve mastered your chosen weapon and find what skills better suit your play style. You can choose a different set of skills which are called Iconic skills (skills that the main super heroes use) which are pretty cool to use but you should focus mostly on your chosen abilities rather than the iconic ones as they hurt your main role and you can only have a maximum of 6 skills on the bar. Once you hit level 30 you’ll have tons more skills than you’ll actually need but it’s good to have to pick and choose what skills you want. It makes you really focus on what play style you’re going to use and helps you master it. I can’t say anything about the combat, it really is the highlight of the game and I’m a PC gamer. I’ve used both the keyboard and mouse combo and the 360 controller and both have their advantages and disadvantages. Regardless, it’s fun to beat people up with your powers and weapons.

Graphics – Oh, they are awesome. I have nothing to say about the graphics. Sure distant things look pretty bad but that’s for server and personal computer stability. So as not to stress your PC or their server too much. Honestly I never really noticed it unless I was actively looking for it. The detail in the game is amazing and it seems to run perfectly fine on older rigs. My friend is using my eight year old rig (P4 ghz, 2gb ram and a 7600 Nvidia graphics card which I upgraded about 4-5 years ago) and the game doesn’t lag one bit. I use an M11X R1 and I’ve had ZERO issues as well.

Glitches – There are TONS of these from crashing when you enter a dungeon to falling through the floor. The healing currently doesn’t always work, so when I’m in a group sometimes I can’t heal anyone other than myself. The only way to fix this is to let myself die and once I respawn I can heal again. The respawn rates (not sure if it was intentional but it seems more like a mistake than anything else) are rediculously high. I kill an enemy and move to the next, before I get my first hit on the second one the one I just killed aggros me. Seriously, it’s annoying because it’s easy to get overwhelmed at times since if one comes to attack you his buddies will also. In higher levels it gets a bit better (or at least for me since I’m a healer) but it is annoying none-the-less. There are more glitches but these are the ones I’ve run into the most. The only one I haven’t run into is the falling through the floor, I bought this game for a buddy of mine and he stopped playing because any time he landed he’d fall right through the floor with no way to return other than waiting 10 minutes or porting back to HQ. Aside from the glitch where you fall through the ground, they are all well known glitches.

End Game – You level to 30 in about two weeks if you only play about an hour a day or so. Once you get to level 30 that means you’ve done the main quest line and probably most if not all the side quests. The only thing left is either to PvP or run instances or you can reroll and do it all over again. I did it three times and by the second time I found myself slightly annoyed. By the third time I rerolled, I actually got bored and gave up on the character. Unfortunately, since instances are such a pain to get into and the queue is so long at times, it means you’ll spend a lot of time just waiting unless you already have a group and even then it could take a bit long. The main redeeming quality is that the devs promised to release new small content once a month and once big chunck of content once every three months.

Economy – There isn’t any. There’s no reason to buy from other players, no reason to buy from stores and no idea why Batman is giving me 11 dollars to stop the joker from blowing up half of Gotham. Money is only used to purchase soda (potions), costumes you don’t already have and for repairs. The main stuff to look for at the end of the game in terms of loot is the special high tier armor for either PvP or PvE. Each one has a different armor set.

Conclusion – The game is fairly new and honestly seems to just be aimed to make a huge bang at the start and then drag on until new content is released. The game was amazing for two weeks but after that, it became stale really fast especially since I had no real way to chat with my league other than sending tells to each person individually. I’d try and get people to join in world chat to do things but there usually weren’t enough people to team up with for instances and when there were, the wait was so long that most would just go about doing their own thing and leave the group. The game is still in beta, I’m going to stay on board with it for another month to see if they fix the chat and the issue with the instances. This game isn’t going to fail but it isn’t going to be a huge success either. I’d tell anyone thinking of getting this game to buy it but after four months or so. Right now, it’s short on content and the community aspect is broken. It isn’t a failed game by any means, but it will mostly be enjoyed by those that don’t enjoy the social aspect of MMOs too much. For me, a community is very important and without it a Massive Multi-player Online game isn’t very massively multi-player. At least the devs seem to be actively working on fixing the glitches. Unfortunately, I noticed that in one of the updates all they did was change the icons as if that’s really what players were worried about. Aside from that, the game has improved from the release date although some odd glitches keep popping up. (like one that popped up yesterday where you lose your connection once you try to enter a dungeon, but the devs already stated they were working on it.)

5/17/2011 Update: Unfortunately, after playing for so long I’ve decided that it just isn’t worth it. The devs failed in their promise for content in a timely manner and glitches have only gotten weirder and more frequent. With each update (they promised one every month since release and have only had 3 so far and they keep getting further apart) they claim to get rid of some glitches while adding a huge amount of new ones. The only reason I lasted this long was because I joined a league that was populated with amazing people but I just couldn’t deal with the dull lifeless world. I’d only log on to enter the same instances over and over to collect marks to buy the higher tier armors. There just isn’t anything at all to do aside from grinding the same missions. There are races but they aren’t fun or addictive for the most part, just a challenge. You could also focus on getting achievements but when that’s one of the main activities in the game it speaks volumes about the lack of content. After the first month and a half of playing this is all there was to do. I stayed this long because the combat was amazingly addictive and fun but even that has changed as the dev’s answer to fixing “exploits” is to add a timer between moves and if you do a move within that time it does zero damage until you stop the combo and restart. An odd and extremely lazy fix. The game had potential but the player base has lost faith in the devs for this game and have left in droves. I recommend this game as a standard type of game, not an MMO. Meaning that you should enjoy the one month and then move on to your next game. I don’t see why I should pay 15 dollars a month for this game as there’s absolutely nothing to do after maxing out your level which is done in two weeks at most. The instances you grind in the end are the same ones you go through as you level up. With about 8 instances that are duo (for two players only) and about 7 for parties of 4 it gets dull. Doing those exact same ones indefinitely to get marks to get better armor to go back and do them again. No real purpose in it. The raids are fun but they’re either ridiculously hard or extremely easy. They don’t seem to know how to balance the difficulty in the game. Once instance which was the hardest to do indefinite spawns was changed to the point that we finished it in 33 minutes. The time achievement was 60 minutes max. When we first did the run it took us about an hour and a half and the second time we got the achievement with three seconds to spare by pure luck. We finished in 33 minutes even though they had to wait for me because I crashed and then had to wait for one of the guys because he had to go on a smoke break. Plenty of MMOs out there that are free and include tons more content. Heck, tons of freeware games that have more content. If you have other games your interested, I suggest spending the money on those first. I stick by my previous review, I just don’t feel like this is a real MMO. It’s a game you play for a month and then dump it. If you’re so interested in parting with 15 dollars a month, there are plenty of other games that are better. If you’re itching for an action combat system then wait for TERA or Firefall.

Who wouldn’t want to make their own superhero and fight alongside Superman or Batman? There’s fun to be had in the game, that’s certain, and there’s quite a few good aspects to the game, but there’s also quite a few weaknesses in the game… things you expect to find in a PC-based game but are absent here.

The storyline is that at one point in the near future in the DC Universe, Lex Luthor staged a massive battle against the greatest heroes, enlisting other supervillains to help him, and he actually won. His victory was short-lived because as soon as the heroes fell, Brainiac invaded earth and took it over. Brainiac had been using nano technology in the form of small devices that spread across the earth gradually stealing superpowers from people. With Earth subjugated now, Lex collected these device from Brainiac’s ship and went back in time to just before his battle against Earth’s heroes to warn them of what the future holds. He also released all of these nanobots so that they went around imbuing people everywhere with the stolen superpowers, powering up thousands of people everywhere so we could be prepared to fight Brainiac. This is where you come in. You are one of those people and you now have superpowers that can be used for good or evil, but will ultimately be used to help defeat Brainiac.

You can create a character for yourself and choose several different aspects of how you appear and what your powers are. You can fall into one of a few role. You can be a tank and deal damage and get enemies to focus on you instead of more fragile teammates; you can be a controller and help buff your teammates or weaken the enemies; or you can be healer and restore health and power to your team. There are preset power groups you can choose from, and each group is broken down into two subgroups. For example, Sorcery gives you access to the Destiny group with powers that directly curse enemies or heal teammates, and it gives access to Summoning where you can summon creatures to assist you or barriers to protect you.

Along with the power group, you can choose a fighting style. You can be a martial artist or gunslinger or swordsman or staff weilder, for instance. Once your fighting style and power choices are made, you can also choose what superpower you have for traveling around the city. You can choose flight, superspeed, or acrobatics. Flying is pretty self-explanatory. Superspeed lets you move like the Flash, quickly covering ground and running up the sides of buildings. Agility lets you move fast and scale any surface, and as you drop from heights, you can sort of glide, covering larger distances more quickly.

Once your powers are selected, you choose your appearance and do have quite a few choices in your costume, and then you begin on Brainiac’s ship where you have to escape. That escape serves as the tutorial. Once complete, you’re in Metropolis or Gotham (depending upon which mentor you chose when you created your character), and Oracle (a DC character) talks to you via radio and guides you on missions.

The good: The game world is beautiful. It’s wonderfully designed and expansive. Missions are either within buildings, or outdoors in key sections of the city, and the city seems like the DC Universe brought to life. Voice acting is good, animations are good, and the game plays like an action game more than an MMO. Missions are grouped together to form little storylines, and the storylines are very reminiscent of DC stories. For example, Gorilla Grod is once again trying to take over the world by devolving people back into apes. Mission arcs are broken down into several smaller missions, and completing the entire arc gives points. With the Gorilla Grod storyline, you start out by protecting people on the beach from the gorilla scouts and then get clues from the scouts, then you head to the boardwalk to break up their devolving machines. Once that’s done, you head into the city and clean out some rooftops where they’re setting up communications arrays and more devolvers, and you eventually work your way to Gorilla Grod’s lab where you meet up with the Flash and help defeat Gorilla Grod himself. Graphical effects are good and animation is also good. What’s nice is that in this huge vibrant city, there are many areas where the signature villains are carrying out their nefarious deeds. It’s nice to have this HUGE city with hotspots spread out. It feels right. Action is fast, and it plays like an action game.

The bad: It plays like an action game. The MMO aspects are quite weak. Though you get either a skill point or power point with each level you attain, you can only have access to six powers at a time. Attacks are carried out by combinations of mouse clicks, so you always have access to all of your attacks, but you can only choose six powers that you have on your power bar (access by pressing numbers 1 through 6 on your keyboard) at a time. To alleviate this only slightly, you can have two preset configurations set up and switch them when you’re out of combat. This is how you choose the role you are when you’re in a team. You can choose that when teamed, you’re either going to be dealing damage or being a controller/healer, for instance. Your powers then act a little differently depending on your role, and you can choose which power loadouts you’ll use. But once again, you only have access to six powers at a time.

Targeting is glitchy, and it’s far to easy when mashing the buttons on your mouse to defeat one of the enemies surrounding you, but have the target switch to a group across the street in the middle of mashing your buttons and wind up angering them and having them run over to fight you too, giving you too many enemies to handle. The chat function is also very weak, I’ve never seen a chat system more bare-bones than this. The window has two tabs so you can either see local chatter from other players (and messages for you), or a combat tab where you can see messages pertaining to your fight (for example, an enemy hitting you generates a message, a power recharging generates a message). When a message comes across a tab that’s not actively displayed, the tab flashes. But there is no way to go to that tab other than calling up the main chat interface, which fills the screen and prevents you from doing anything.

You see, the PC game is a direct translation of the PS3 game. As such, elements on the screen such as health, status, power bars, chat windows, etc. are totally static and unmovable. The chat window is to the left of and above my power bar across the bottom of the screen. Since my display is high resolution, there’s plenty of room for the chat window to be moved down into the corner, but it’s raised above the power bar so that it can’t accidentally overlap the power bar on lower resolution displays. Since the game was designed to be played with a PS3 controller, there’s only a few buttons that actually do things. That’s why you only have access to six powers…. it would be too difficult to have more because the PS3 only has a few buttons you can press. Moving your mouse moves the camera angle and your power of view around, but you never get a mouse pointer unless you open up a menu. Forget about clicking on objects in the world. This really is a console game and is also why the game plays like an action game.

The RPG functions are rather weak in that even in control/heal roles, there is little variation to perform (the limit of six powers at a time). Because of this, there is a tendency to just mash your mouse buttons for attacks and occasionally press your power buttons to take out tough enemies. Since you don’t have a mouse cursor, you can’t even scroll through the various missions you have lined up. It’s easy to wind up with more missions than can fit on the screen, but you can’t scroll through them to choose ones that appear off-screen.

There is a design flaw in the central hub of the game, the Watchtower satellite that ties together all of the various zones. The Watchtower is HUGE! Navigating through it is difficult even with the minimap. While it looks incredible and fits into the DC Universe very appropriately, actually going there and talking to people or changing zones is time-consuming. I actually got lost in it and spent 15 minutes trying to find the exit I needed.

Your travel powers are fun, but are a bit lacking. They move you faster through the world, but still feel somewhat slow. And they negate for a brief time if you attack or are attacked. For example, you’re in superspeed mode zipping along, and a villain on the street fires at you, so you drop to normal running speed for a period. Since the villain can run as fast as your normal running speed, he just keeps running after you shooting and preventing you from superspeeding away. Inside missions, the constant battles keeps you constantly moving at the suppressed speed. A good point I’ve seen is that the travel powers can be expanded to include attacks and such, though I haven’t tried them out yet.

Along with normal powers, you get access to “iconic powers” at level 10 on. Things that DC characters have like Heat Vision or Freezing Breath. Some of these iconic powers are quite… useless. For example, “Word of Power” is supposed to be reminiscent of when Billy Batson says “SHAZAM” and turns into Captain Marvel. A bolt of lightning comes down, knocking back enemies around you and healing you. Obviously a power to be used in combat. The problem is that you levitate for several seconds while the power charges up and you can’t do anything during that time. Every single time I’ve tried to use it in combat, it caused me to die because I wasn’t fighting back while I was waiting for it to activate.

OVERALL: It’s fun, that’s for certain. It’s bright and colorful and well-scripted. But it’s also a tad repetitive because of the limits on the choices you can perform (only six powers at a time, only two buttons for performing attacks). The stories are fun and the world is stunning, but it lacks features found in newer games because it never takes advantage of having a mouse and is simplified for use with a controller on a game console. Long-term playability, I feel, is weak. While it’s fun at first, I imagine in a month or two, you may not be renewing the subscription. Yes there are some bugs, but I don’t list them because they will get fixed. Instead, I focused on design elements that are less apt to change.

I will try to break this down into different areas that I have played so far:

Character Creation:
What can I say about this? As would be expected with a superhero MMO, this is an extremely strong point. You can literally create any hero you want with any color combination (limited to 3 main colors or you can pick a favorite hero and have the game make a char with a similar look and feel to that hero) and equipment combo you want. There are three main “Classes” that you will pick from (Defensive, Controller, Healing) which will define you in group role. Of these classes there are 2 different types of powers you can pick from (I.E. I made a controller with mental powers, I use illusions and telekinesis as my supernatural powers). After this you will be asked to pick a weapon that you will use (there are loads! Everything from bows to staves to pistols to giant 2 handed weapons). Then you choose a travel mode (Flight, Speed, or Acrobatics) which is how you get around. Creation is strong, and you can spend a lot of time making the exact hero you want (I think I spent almost an hour)!

Combat:
There is a major stray from your typical MMO in their combat system which will be good for many and, I am sure, bad for just as many. The combat system follows a more combo/interactive style. So for example, my char, the bow wielding mental maniac shoots his bow with right mouse, can charge a shot by holding right mouse, bashes with the bow with left mouse, and has several combos revolving around this. Powers are used by your typical “Toolbar and mana/energy system” But by doing this minor change to combat DCUO has made combat much more interactive rather than a spam of “Rotations”. I think combat will be strong in this game

Graphics/Sound:
Also strong in this game, everything I have encountered so far is voice acted and voiced pretty well. Graphics are beautiful. Good to see. However, at a distance, I have seen some enemies being rather choppy. I am not sure if this is due to high player volumes on launch day or if it is a game issue. If you can run this game at max graphics you’ll be happy.

PVP:
Haven’t had a chance to try this yet, unfortunately. I do have a questline to open up arenas and there are the equivalents of battlegrounds. I also play on a PvP server but have yet to fight my first villain in world PvP!

Quests/Experience/Gear:
The quests are pretty inventive and seem to all be large questlines that progress into larger and larger events. An example is last night I was in Metropolis and there was an Ape Supervillain (sorry I am not terribly familiar with anyone who’s not a major player in DC) that was devolving citizens into apes. Superman called me for help and, of course I obliged. The first quest was to take out ape guards that were devolving citizens. I then went to take out their reinforcements and fuel supplies. Then I was asked to go re-evolve citizens. Then take out the machines allowing this to happen. Then The Flash went missing and I was asked to help(and it was bedtime). You will get your generic kill monsters quests, but they are spun into a story that makes it less mind numbing. Leveling is going pretty fast (but it is still early in the game). And gear, from what I can tell, is similar to most games with your common/good/rare items. One thing to say about gear is that the gear will change the look of your hero but you can change this to keep your ‘classic’ look or continuously upgrade your look.

Overall:
I think this has a very strong start for an MMO, however, the upcoming months will really show whether or not the game will live or die. It is hard to tell if it will become a big player on the MMO market until some time has passed, but the game did start off on the right foot if you ask me. It definitely IS a step off of the beaten path, but that will appeal to many since we have been seeing games that are practically clones of each other over and over and over.

Hope this review helps you!

W. Clayton
I’ve used Quicken for Windows since 1994 and have been quite pleased with it. I’ve updated every few years, and am currently using Quicken 2005 Deluxe for Windows XP on my PC. I have no major complaints about the Windows versions that I’ve used.

Last year, I bought my first Mac (the last of the G5 iMacs). I fell in love with it and I now use it for everything except finances. My Mac came with a free version of Quicken for Mac, and I assumed that I’d just be able to start it up and have instant access to the Quicken data on my PC over my home network. However, Quicken for Mac would not recognize my Quicken file, nor would it restore the backup files. So I assumed that this was because it was some sort of free stripped-down trial version that had expired, or something like that. I therefore recently purchased the latest and greatest version of Quicken for Mac (2007), assuming that this would do the trick and that I could finally junk my rusty PC.

WRONG.

The full-priced “full-featured” 2007 version of Quicken for Mac wouldn’t read my existing Quicken files, either. So I looked in the instructions and found a blurb about converting a Quicken for Mac file to a Quicken for Windows file, but found nothing about converting from Windows to Mac.

I had to search the Quicken website to find a document explaining how to convert a Quicken database from Windows to Mac. It quickly became very clear that if you’re a long-time user of Quicken for Windows and you want to convert to Quicken for Mac, you’re basically screwed. Unless, that is, you’ve only been using Quicken for a few simple tasks such as balancing your checkbook. If, like me, you have multiple investment accounts of various types with records going back many years, you might has well forget about converting to Quicken for Mac.

For starters, it turns out that there are a lot accounts and reports that simply won’t convert at all, so you’ll just have to lose those. For example, Quicken for Windows handles 401(k) accounts (a fairly common type of account). Quicken for Mac does not. So you can kiss your 401(k) data goodbye. Same with Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable (fairly common things for those of us with home businesses). Same with Memorized Reports, Security Price Histories, etc.

If you decide that you can live without such things, you can proceed with the adventure of converting your Windows data to Mac data. Note that no conversion utility exists, so you have to do an enormous amount of hand-editing of the database.

The conversion process requires that you go through all transaction categories supported by the Windows version and look for those with names longer than 15 characters. The instructions don’t make it clear whether a blank space counts as a character, but I assume it does. You’re supposed to rename these categories to bring them within the 15 character limit. Quicken 2005 for Windows has at least one such category that cannot be renamed (Quicken simply won’t let you do it). The others can be renamed, however.

Then you have to rename any accounts that are longer than 15 characters.

Then you have to edit your securities list to make sure every ticker symbol is all-caps.

Then, if you have a mutual fund account that contains any RtrnCapX transactions, you have to change that mutual fund account to a regular investment account.

OK, now you’ve done all that. The next step is to go through all your accounts one at a time, look at each transaction, and manually change the categories for certain transactions. There are 7 transaction types that exist in the Windows version but not in the Mac version. For example, MargInt (margin interest expense) does not exist in the Mac version, so you have to find every single margin interest event in your records and manually change it to a miscellaneous expense, with a note in the comment field that it’s for margin interest. Then you have to do similar conversions for the six other transaction types that aren’t supported. For example, every MiscIncX transaction has to be manually changed to a combination of a MiscInc and an XIn. If you have multiple accounts containing more than a decade’s worth of transactions (as I do), this becomes a formidable task.

There’s more to do after this, but this was the point at which I threw up my hands and decided that it’s just not worth it. I’d have to hand-edit hundreds of transactions in my Quicken database and hope that I got them all right. Then I’d have to live with a version of Quicken that lacks many of the features to which I’ve become accustomed over the years.

Quicken offers an option where you can send them your file and have them convert it for you, but they won’t convert the non-supported transactions to supported ones. So, for example, you’d simply lose all records of your margin interest expense. They claim, however, that they’ll arrange things so that the correct balance is preserved in each account even though all those transactions will be missing. How nice. And if you want to use their conversion services, you have to go through a lot of rigamarole just to get them to do it.

So, I’m stuck with a useless piece of software that I downloaded from Intuit’s online store for $60.

Looks like I’ll have to keep my PC running until I get an Intel Mac that will allow me to use Bootcamp. Also, rumor has it that the Leopard version of OS X, when running on an Intel Mac, will allow you to run Windows XP applications directly under OS X (without rebooting and without emulation), but this is still just a rumor.

This experience has left me with a very low opinion of Intuit.

I had some difficulty adjusting to the different interface, and a few quirks when transferring my account data over, but now that I’ve been using it exclusively for about 5 months it is just great. If you’re switching from PC to Mac, just think of this as a different product and don’t expect the exact same features. I find this one actually easier now that I’ve used it. I was just used to where everything was in the windows world since I had been using that for so long.

Here are the things that I think can be improved on the Mac version:

+ there’s no way to sort the account register by amount. You can only sort by date and the check number field. I like to sort by amount sometimes so I can find a specific dollar amount (minor irritation)

+ the reporting feature is a bit cumbersome. If you’re like me, you’ll want to just click the buttons and get your report created without having to read the documentation. I managed to get what I needed without the help screens, but it was still a bit of work. Thinking back, I had this same problem with the Windows version, so this is not a Mac vs Windows issue – it’s an overall Quicken issue.

+ I was really annoyed with the way it connected to my online banking accounts when I first started using this version. I think it can still be improved like the Windows version. With the Windows version, one click from inside Quicken and it’s connecting to my bank and downloading the latest transactions for all my accounts. With the Mac version I have to login to my bank then download each account’s activity file. Now that I’m used to it, it is less irritating to me, but it still would be nice to have that one click feature back.

What I do like about the Mac version:

It works. It does what I want it to do and it does it well. I don’t need to keep a Windows computer around just to do my banking. When I switched to Mac, I switched to Mac – it’s all or nothing for me.

I don’t do a lot of finance work with Quicken, never did. I just keep track of my checking, savings and credit cards. I know there are a lot more features should I ever need them. But I like simple, quick and easy. Quicken 2007 for the Mac works for me.

++UPDATE: I am using this on a MacBook Pro (Intel version) with OSX.

Quicken for the Mac still doesn’t know how to handle a brokerage account that lets you write checks off your cash balance (e.g., E*Trade) without forcing you to split the account into two ledgers that you have to relate manually (Quicken for Windows had this feature eight years ago!). My financial institutions (e.g., Fidelity) that used to say “online features not compatible with Quicken for the Mac” still aren’t compatible with Quicken for the Mac. And it still refuses to remember where on the screen I left my windows.

Meanwhile, the changes they do make are fluff. I’ve always been able to schedule bills and payments in Quicken, why would I even want to involve iCal now?

If it weren’t for Intuit’s practice of arbitrarily discontinuing all online connectivity for old versions of Quicken when they reach a certain age, I’d never upgrade at all. I haven’t seen anything actually USEFUL in a Quicken Upgrade in the past five years.

Scott
I am not going to go into my whole experience with Parallels. I have had good and bad with all versions. The problem is three fold in how well Parallels will work. You have the host OS which can be Snow Leopard (very mature) Lion (has its own quirks yet) or maybe your still with Leopard. The second is your hardware, because running not only a Mac OS but then a program that runs in OS X and also runs a version of Windows is going to need RAM and a decent CPU. The third thing is to decide if you want to run Windows native too for things like gaming. If so consider installing BootCamp from Apple first. Its free and it will make Parallels easier too.
Now for Parallels 7 review. It is faster on my 2010 Macbook Air then Parallels 6 to a point. I am limited to 2GB RAM so any virtual OS is going to have to deal with that limitation. If you don’t tend to run a lot of programs in OS X and/or Windows at once then 2GB will do. But you will notice slowdowns at times. If you have Lion OS BootCamp will limit you to Windows 7. Parallels is the way to go if you want XP or cringe Vista. Parallels 7 does take advantage of some of Lion’s new features. Full screen for one. It does make Windows look as though your running only Windows. But if your not a Lion user then Parallels 7 may not have anymore then a speed bump for you.
As far as using it, I have used it about a week and for the most part it does work OK. Its never going to run as fast as a native PC running Windows or even in BootCamp. If you really want to see what Windows can do on a Mac then use BootCamp. It is one reason Apple only really supports BootCamp. My cons about Parallels 7 are high CPU usage at times, slow downs when opening lots of browser tabs or programs. Needs 4GB ram to run well. Have to buy Parallels and a copy of Windows. So it gets kind of expensive. If you really need to go back and forth between the two operating systems. (Windows & OS X) then Parallels is a good choice. For better performance and saving a little bit of money try BootCamp first.

However, after a recent update my machines seem to have slowed down, and VMWare consumes a lot of CPU even when my virtual machines are idle. I decided to try Parallels 7, and I am SO GLAD that I did. It is way faster, way more polished, and easy to customize the way I like. I wish I would have switched years ago!!! Importing from my VMWare machines as as simple as pressing a button … it was all automatic and worked perfectly for me. I like to run in “full screen” mode when I am using Windows, and Parallel’s Lion support makes this much smoother (each machine in full screen mode gets its own “space” in OSX Lion).

Anyone who is using VMWare and who isn’t totally happy with it should consider switching now!!!

p.s. VMWare Fusion users can get a copy for $29 from Parallel’s web site … do a google search to find the order page. You just need to enter your VMWare Fusion license to qualify.

22 of 24 people found the following review helpful.
Best version so far
By Matt Eye
Now the version 6 of Parallels worked very well on Snow Leopard and Lion (later found the ‘shutdown problem’ in Snow Leopard/Lion not a Parallels issue, even though the cause I couldn’t find out). The only problem with version 6 was its somewhat laggy resume from suspension, but this has been improved in version 7, and Windows XP runs a little quicker too–whether startup and shutdown. Wow, shutdown is a bit faster now. The interface of Parallels takes on the Lion look, which I don’t care for as much (why Apple didn’t stick to the traditional blue candy cane look on scroll bars I am not exactly sure, but it may have something to do with iOS interface).

Five stars for performance (the best in this version yet), and the bugs that other reviewers have mentioned, I have not come across. My Mac Pro is exactly four years old now (yes, late September 2007). It does help having 10 GB of RAM, even though for my needs, Windows XP runs fine on 512 MB allocated (but then I don’t have a lot installed, and no antivirus program, a common culprit for slowdown). Upon occasion (when starting the Virtual Machine), Parallels gives a message though, that you need 256 MB of video memory (NVIDIA) for 3D acceleration, but I just ignore this because I don’t do gaming or other 3D work on Windows. If any other gripe is very minor, and previous versions didn’t do this… When I minimize Parallels 7, and go to restore (left-click on the Dock), it likes to restore to 640 x 480, and then I simply click the green ‘+’ sign to maximize it back to where it was before. I won’t dock anything off (or 4.5 stars would be fair) because I find many other minor niggles (quirks) in Lion that irritate me mildly, more often.

Installation took a little time and went smoothly, but my bad (operator error) for having disabled Internet connection when installing Parallels Tools. It gave an error report message but I simply ignored and went to the menu to reinstall the tools. It has happened to me before (not the error screen but sometimes when an older version of the Virtual Machine were shutdown improperly). This was often due to the Finder not responding–Parallels had a tendency to cause unresponsive behavior, but I haven’t yet seen this in version 7, so the bug must’ve been corrected–so far. Everything has worked fine at this time.

I recommend this version. Still have version 6 that I just upgraded to version 7 with the discount. Keep in mind that in order to receive updates from their site (I didn’t buy Parallels 6 and 7 on Amazon), you should register. It takes a minute or two. It does, in some cases, give a popup, asking if you want to install Kapersky, but I don’t care for this antivirus program, originally because I thought it caused Mac not to shutdown properly. I had tried running Malwarebytes’ Antivirus or AVG Antivirus, but they didn’t play nicely with Windows XP running on Parallels 6, and there were unwanted ads. AVG isn’t free anymore, at least in the version I tried. I just don’t go online with Parallels (as I use Firefox or Chrome on Mac, which is safer anyway), leaving the Internet connection (adapter) disabled, enabling it if necessary. As far as the offer to buy Parallels 7, I went ahead and did so, and have been glad since. Important note though, if I recall correctly, if you have version 4 (had many bugs and very slow performance in my trial use) or earlier, the upgrade key won’t work for version 7. Good luck.
